Waste Separation & Disposal in Korea: A Quick Guide for Foreigners
Waste disposal in Korea is regulated by law and applies equally to foreigners. Unlike countries where trash can be thrown away together, Korea requires strict separation of general waste, food waste, recyclables, and large waste.
Korea uses a volume-based waste fee system. General waste must be disposed of in government-designated bags, while food waste and recyclables must be separated. Mixing waste or using non-designated bags can result in fines, especially in apartments where disposal is closely monitored.
During moving, many foreigners make mistakes. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, blankets, and rugs cannot be thrown away as regular trash. These items are classified as large waste and require prior reporting and payment through the local district or city office. Cardboard boxes are recyclable only after removing tape and stickers.
Large waste disposal steps:
Local district/city website → Large Waste Reporting → Enter items → Pay fee → Attach sticker or disposal number → Dispose on the assigned date.
Unreported disposal is illegal and may lead to fines. Apartment residents should check with the management office.
